White Collar Crimes

The term "white collar crimes" gets its name from the facts that they usually occur within a business setting or professional setting such as a Doctor's Office or Hospital. It usually involves the theft of money or information by a person who is an employee with the company. The most common white collar crimes include: money laundering, fraud, internet crimes, tax evasion, embezzlement and bribery. Money laundering means hiding where you obtain the money and making it look like the funds came from a legitimate source. Fraud includes bankruptcy fraud, counterfeiting, bank fraud, tax fraud and more. Internet crimes include child pornography, harassment, stalking and bank fraud.

Most of the time, "white collar crimes" are charged after a lengthy investigation. If you are contacted by the authorities and they want to talk to you about any of the above, you need an experienced lawyer.  The phrase "anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law" is true. The only reason law enforcement officers speak to suspects is to make a stronger case against those suspects.

The law enforcement officers of white collar crimes are excellent investigators. If they are talking to you about any suspicious activity, you are already under suspicion. It is advisable to have an experienced criminal defense lawyer present.
